Today is the reveal for the Beading Around a Cabochon Challenge hosted by Sally Russick! She not only hosted the hop, but she provided video tutorials for us newbies! She is so incredibly generous and I can’t thank her enough for doing this! I make cabs, but never beaded one and I’m so excited to have finished it! Here’s a link to the cabochon section in my etsy store!
I started out by using one of my own cabs that I really love – it’s made with pale aqua glass, silver foil and frit. I have a lot of fun making cabs because you have to get them just right on the mandrel and it’s a very zen sort of thing for me to do.
I am really happy with my choice of beads, and how it turned out! I’m going to either use a blue suede cord to hang it on, or a chain – I can’t decide yet, I think the blue suede would be best. I can’t bead a rope yet, but hopefully I’ll learn that someday!
I already started working on another for my mom!
Please check out everyone else’s blog to see what they made! I know I can’t wait. And thanks again, Sally!

oh wonderful bead work on your cab! and great choice of colors to bring out the beautiful work in that cab!
This is beautiful, Sue! I love the soft blues! I bezel set in silver two of your cabs earlier this year for special gifts. If I ever truly get the hang of this silver setting, I hope to do more!
You made a beautiful pendant and cabochon. How do you make cabs using a mandrel? I have seen cabochon mandrels for sale. What do you recommend?
What a beautiful cabochon you made! Thank you for all the pictures of the progression. It was nice to see since I'm not a beader/embroiderer.
Sue, first I have to say, I totally adore the cab you chose. Turquoise and brown go together like Me, Myself & I! 😉 Your beadwork around the cab is beautiful! You'd never know that this wasn't your regular design style! Great job my friend!
{Hugs!}
Dawn
It is wonderful to see what you create with your beautiful cab!
Kudos for trying something new! Love your color selection for this cab. What ever chain or cord you chose, I'm sure you'll get lots of compliments on this one.
Lynda
I am so impressed that you (and others) can do such great beading work first time out. It almost ( but not quite) makes me wonder if I could actually do that beadwork. But more fun to just leave it to others. I love your cab and vote for the suede!
I agree – love the color choices for your cab design. And it's even better since you made the actual cab as well as embellishment. Great idea about the suede cord to hang as well. Sometimes cabs can have a bit of a fussy look and the suede cord sets them up for more versatile wear.
I love the cab you made and what a great job you did making your first beaded bezel!
That's beautiful, Sue. It must feel great to be able to make your own lampwork cab and then bead bezel it, too!
I'm definitely going to check out the cabs in your shop, too…
I've really got to carve out some time to go though Sally's series on this. It's always something I've wanted to learn and your contribution to this hop really reminds me why. Of course, your beautiful glass cab just makes that desire worse. 🙂
You made a very lovely piece. I love simple designs and your use of seed beads with the cabochon just looks amazing.
You chose a gorgeous cabochon for this challenge and your choice of colours for the bezel really made it shine.
I love that your followed the tutorials all the way through. I got sidetracked, but mine turned out okay. Yours however is perfect. I'm sure your mother's will turn out great too.
Sue you did a great job on your first stitched bezel. Thanx for showing the step by step. I'm glad you are doing one for your Mom too. Your cabs are very cool.
Beautiful job Susan, I love your cab the color of beads you chose compliment the cab well Bravo to you for trying your hand at seed beading. If you want I can send you som very simple turtorials on beaded ropes. I am going to go check out your Etsy shop.
Therese
Great step by step, which only reinforces the patience needed for this technique.
Beautiful!
Beautiful work, I love your cabs!
Sue! You did a FANTASTIC job!! Your pendants and of course the beadweaving is BEAUTIFUL!!! I'm soooo proud of you!! Thank you for so much for participating in the challenge!
Beautiful. Perfect choice of seed beads. Your mom will love hers, I hope you post a picture of that one when its finished.
I love the progress pics. You did a great job with your beading and cabs.
Sorry I am so late getting to this blog hop. Your cabs are dreamy and the blue one is my my favorite color.
Sue-I love the colors you selected for your cab. They give it a rich look with depth. Your bead work is wonderful. Great job!
